That time honored, Christmas shopping kick off tradition of Black Friday is that day after Thanksgiving where shoppers fight tooth and nail against hordes of other shoppers in order to snatch the best deals. The name itself started 1961 Philadelphia due to the heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic through out the city. Later it was used to describe the profit shift by retailers from the financial loss “in the red” to black. It’s the biggest shopping day of the year. This year was no different with about $12.3 billion of merchandise sold on that single day.
For those that don’t like fighting the crowds and just want to relax after a day of eating and dealing with family there’s Cyber Monday. It’s like Black Friday but the deals are for you internet shoppers. Last year it generated around $1.4 billion more for retailers and grows every year.
The first use of the term Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 when online retailers saw an exponential growth with online sales on that Monday after Thanksgiving. That next year in 2006 ecommerce soared to $608 million. With an average growth of about 20% each year in a few more seasons Cyber Monday just might rival that traditional Black Friday.
